As Pennsylvania Radon Data Puts Typical York County System Cost Near $1,150, Online Guide Adds Calculator
With Pennsylvania DEP records for 701 York County systems showing a median cost of $1,150 and 97.4% testing below the EPA action level, the York Radon Mitigation Guide adds a data-based cost calculator.

Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers in the United States, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, and the only way for a homeowner to know whether a house has elevated levels is to test. For York County residents weighing mitigation, the question that follows testing is often what a system costs. Newly compiled state records covering 701 mitigation systems installed in the county between 2024 and 2026 now give that question a factual answer, and the York Radon Mitigation Guide has added a cost calculator built on those figures.
According to Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection records, the middle half of those 701 systems cost between $935 and $1,320, with a median of $1,150. The figures reflect systems reported by York County contractors to the state agency during the two-year period. The calculator, added to the guide's online resources, is intended to give homeowners a data-based estimate of what a system typically costs in the local market.
The same records show that 97.4% of the reported systems tested below the EPA's action level of 4.0 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) after installation. The EPA recommends mitigation when indoor radon levels reach or exceed that threshold.
Radon is a radioactive gas that forms naturally from the decay of uranium in soil and rock. It is odorless and invisible, and testing is the only way to determine whether a home has elevated levels.
The guide describes the components of a typical radon mitigation system, including sub-slab depressurization, sealing of entry points, and venting arrangements. It also outlines the steps involved in hiring a mitigator certified by the Pennsylvania DEP, which maintains a list of certified contractors in the state.
The calculator uses the reported cost range and median as reference points. Actual costs can vary with home size, foundation type, and the mitigation method selected.
The underlying records are available through the Pennsylvania DEP's open data portal at data.pa.gov and were retrieved on September 30, 2026. The York Radon Mitigation Guide states that its calculator is based on those records and does not represent an offer of mitigation services.
"The DEP data gives homeowners a factual starting point for budgeting," said a representative of The Company. "The reported range and the post-installation test results are the two figures most often requested by York County residents."
